Comics/animation school in Australia?
Good comics/animation school (for cartoonists or animators) in Australia? Hi, guys. I am thinking about going to Australia, is there any illustration schools in Australia, and in which city? I am more interested in comics production, but animation is OK also. I was thinking about applying to Van-Arts (Canada) in first, but it seems to be that in Australia education is MUCH cheaper than in Canada. Will highly appreciate ANY help? Thank you very much in advance!

i live in melbourne and havent heard of any 'animation schools'. however, i know that TAFEs offer illustration and 'comic' type courses. google tafe or chisolm, melbourne goodluck!

Timeline for attending college in Australia for a US student

Timeline for attending college in Australia for a US student?
I am a current US high school senior, and was thinking of applying to a university in Australia... I tried looking for a timeline for admissions stuff, but couldn't find any. Since first semester is in January for schools in Australia, how would that work as a US student? And if I applied now would I be able to get an admissions decision around the same time I'll be getting decisions for my schools in the US?

You won't find any general timeline info about studying abroad because each university and college the world over has its own timeline set for native and foreign students. I'm guessing you would have to start the process well in advance if they start university in January. That is a bit of poor planning right off the bat, and you can't survive in a foreign country if you can't plan properly. First of all - you have no idea what school you even want to go to in Australia. So, that lets me know that this may be a spur of the moment decision for you. If you had researched and narrowed down the colleges of choice you were looking at - you would not even have to post this question because all of them would have had a section for "international applicants" that would have told you exactly what to do. So I suggest, if you're really serious about this, that your next steps be thusly: 1) Decide what you want to major in. What are your career interests. There's no way you're gonna go to another country and do what most American kids do here - waffle around not declaring a major til Jr year - and even then, still not being sure. So narrow down some majors for yourself. 2) RESEARCH and IDENTIFY Australian universities that can accommodate that major! You're not gonna go to Australian Arts University if you wanna be a scientist. Then again, if you are going back and forth between wanting to be a scientist and a writer - you may want to research both types of universities and then -> 3) LOOK up the admission requirements and deadlines for foreign students for EACH school you're interested in. You will probably have to have your grades and other test scores converted to its equivalent in Australia. This stuff takes TIME. You may even have to take Australian tests if American ones aren't accepted (i.e. ACT, SAT). You will probably need recommendations from teachers, employers, etc. You'll more than likely have to write an essay about why you want to go to that university. 4) READ the application requirements and begin getting the materials together to be able to complete the application CORRECTLY. Then fill out the application online (or however they request it). FINANCIAL AID will be a huge factor - that's also another process that takes massive amounts of TIME. You'll be wanting to research and apply for study abroad or international education scholarships. Trust me - you'll need that. A lot of universities want to know you can support yourself UP FRONT for all the years you intend to be there as you will not have access to their welfare or needy person programs. And most, if not all, foreign universities will not allow you to work any significant amount of time while you study. They are not trying to give their resources and jobs to people who have other countries to go home to and for whom studying abroad is a luxury. If your parents will fork over enough cash to cover you - you'll have to prove that you have all the money you need IN THE BANK before you leave. They'll ask for financial records. You will definitely be too late to apply for and win any scholarships at this late date. You can try checking www.fastweb.com as a start. It's a great resource anyway. Your high school counselor should also be able to tell you of other relevant scholarship and grant opportunities, but since you're the one who wants to go abroad - you're the one responsible to do the leg work to try to get there. Be sure that you want to go to the university, too as some of them may charge steep admissions fees of $50 - $75 dollars or more. They do this so they don't waste time going through frivolous applications. 5) IDENTIFY the person to contact for international applicants and make sure you email that person or call. They have hundreds and hundreds of new and returning applicants and can't be expected to remember any of you. The more you make yourself known, the better advantage you give yourself over other applicants. Don't email the person every day or anything, but as soon as you identify them - find a reason to touch base. Email them and tell them you've just submitted an application and you're excited about the possibility of being accepted and if they need any additional information from you - feel free to let you know. Ask them if there are any current American and/or Australian students who would be willing to talk to you about the university and their experiences there. ALWAYS DO THAT. It shows you're serious and that you have a real interest in the university and the university culture.

As far as I know you go into whichever year group is for your age. For example, if you are 16 years old before september this year, in September you will go into year 12, which is technically considered college or further education, since after year 11 education is not compulsory in the UK. Years 12 and 13 are for the 16-18 year olds, and that's when you choose 1-4 specific subjects to take to AS (1 year course) or A2 Level (continued for a second year). As I said though, it's not compulsory, although if you want to get to Uni, you should take your A2s.

We do not have "grades" in schools in London or the UK - which 'class' you are put in depends entirely on what age you are at the start of September each year. September is the start of the school year here. Each 'class' is given a year number starting from one for children of 5 years old. So you will go into Year 7 if you are 11 at the start of September You will go into Year 8 if you are 12 at the start of September Year 9 if you are 13 at the start of September. Year 10 if you are 14 at the start of September Year 11 if you are 15 at the start of September Year 12 if you are 16 at the start of September. This has no relation to whatever academic qualifications you may have received elsewhere. So whether you will be repeating any of the work you have already done will depend on the differences in curriculums between the UK and Australia

The Cert IV is meaningless with regards to primary and high school teaching. You will need either 1) Bachelor of Education, or 2) Bachelor of X plus a Graduate Diplomain Education , or 3) Bachelor of Education (Primary). Each is a 4 year process.

At UWS, the Bachelor of Arts (Pathways to Teaching Primary) is a three year full time undergraduate degree. It will allow you to complete an Education Studies major, gaining the necessary learning areas to satisfy the NSW Institute of Teachers discipline knowledge requirements for entry into further studies in teaching. Just so you know the truth...if you want to attend school in another country , you need plenty of money...financial aid id usually not available for foreign students. And, you will be required to show proof of a sufficient amount of savings to cover your tuition and living expenses. Are you talking about high school or university? You will find that if you want to "live life to the fullest", you will need to be able to pay for it. I hope you can find a way but just be prepare for it to not be cheap.

I noticed that they offer both of those degrees. The Master of Commerce degrees in Australia are awarded by the Faculty of Business and Economics of the respective school for the most part, at times by the business school. The MBA is always awarded by the Business School of that school. Both degrees are really expensive. What is the main difference between these two degrees and how are they regarded? How would employers in the US for instance distinguish between the Master of Commerce from Australia and the MBA from there? Note, the Master of Commerce is NOT an MS degree. It is a Master in Business. Almost all schools in Australia have it such as Monash, Queensland, Sydney, Macquarie etc. In the States this degree doesn't exist at all.

hi there Patricia... I saw you nice answer for the other person to explain what I found it to be like... I cannot tell you what is like in the USA as Im at an all girls boarding school in South Africa (lol), and have been for a few years now... but then I saw your question about boarding... it would be nice to chat anyway.... Oh and I have two and a bit years to go (I'm in grade 10 now) before I finish boarding school and Im really trying so hard... even after all these years! Not much fredom here in SA... im sure its very similar an many ways...I was 11 when i was sent but i find i had this absolute and sometimes overwhelming sense of sadness and loss when i first came... i though i had come to some terms with being here... i feel if i had had more people to talk to and share what it about, it may of helped??? I'm from melbourne so I can't say I've experienced dance schools over there. Though I have heard about Sydney dance company(SDC) offering Hip hop classes. Taught by world class teachers such as Yannus Sufandi who was on the Asian sytycd as a choreographer and judge, they also have a lot of guest choreographers such as JD from sytycd Australia. SDC has a very good reputation and world renouned dancers. Knowing many people who have studied there I can say it's a reputable school. They also one of the only schools probably in this country that teach a variety of dance styles including contemporary,ballet ,funk , latin american,JFH which is a combination of jazz funk and hip hop which is taught by Rhiannon Villareal from sytycd Australia. You're actualy quite lucky to live in sydney to be able to take advantage of such an amazing school connected to an amazing dance company.

You want answers from people who've actually experienced the place - then go to your local dancewear shop. It's their business to know who teaches what and where. Better than phoning around as each school will try to sell itself. Dancewear shops have no ax to grind so will give unbiased opinions (hopefully) so you could try more than one. Good Luck

Every school has different fees so it's impossible to give you a firm reply to your question about costs. Also no one can tell you if it's 'expensive' because we don't know your personal finances to determine what's considered expensive or not for you. You will need to research the individual universities in order to get an estimate of their tuition costs and determine for yourself.

Actually this is an easy question to answer. If you are an overseas student in primary school (regardless of the school) the government fee is 4K per year per child PLUS what ever fee the individual school may place on you.

aww, calm down honey :) I live in Canberra (the capital of Australia) and people are very relaxed and welcoming. People will generally start conversations with you, because you are the new kid, so be very polite, answer their questions nicely, be welcoming and inviting, and people will instantly click with you. Don't be afraid t ask for help, if you need to find your way to classes or anything, and that will also be a good way to get to know people. Good luck and have lots of fun in the mighty land of aus :)

People in school take to the British very well, every British kid that moved to the school I went to made friends very easily. DO NOT be shy and quite because this will make people think your not interested and they will not approach you in the first place, you need to talk back and engage people in order for them to be comfortable and want to be friends. You'll make friends in no-time! :)

Okay I'm in 10th grade and I'm planning on going to school next year in australia. By the time I finish my summer vacation here in the U.S, They will be on their school holidays. I would start in february. Anyway, If I'm in all honors and an Ap, would I be able to go into 12th grade over there? What do you think? Or, if I go to a community college for a semester, would I be able to get credits for 11th and move into 12th in Australia? thanks

Australia does not have community college - its TAFE is post high school. Depending on which state you are going to Year 12 either goes from Feb-Nov or Oct-Sep (i.e in NSW there are three terms of year 11 (instead of 4) and the last term of the year everyone starts year 12. A significant portion of the year 12 mark is assessment throughout the year so if you are going to NSW then your year 12 score (which is also your uni entrance score) will be lower. Usually when you change from northern to southern or vice versa you are put back 6 months (i.e. you will do six more months of year 11 before going onto year 12). Australian and American high school is completely different from each other so you will need that extra time to acclimatize. The most important difference is that you compete against the ENTIRE STATE for each subject - not just the students in your school (the end of year exam for each subject is sat at the same time across the state and is the same exam - that score is then you uni entrance score in that subject).

In Australia Year 12 is HSC, a major exam year. We don't really have a community college, I think you mean TAFE. Some of my friends go there but that is for when you finish high school and is limited in courses that you can study. Year 12 is apparently (I'm not in Year 12 yet) the best year of high school here cos you get heaps of free classes (in which you do "work" or watever you like) in between actual classes, there is muck up day at the end of the year and a formal. Also after Year 12, here in Australia we celebrate alot. You can go to schoolies which is a holiday for a week or two up in QLD with friends and just do something else. Hope you like Australia!!! PS: Remember there is no way to earn extra credit here in Australia!

G'day, William Angliss TAFE, as the previous answerer recommended, is one. But there are also others like Blue Mountain School in Sydney. It depends on what level do you want to study in. TAFE/colleges usually offer non-degree courses, whereas universities offer degree courses. There are only 42 (soon to be 43) universities in Australia, all of them are fully accredited and they are tightly controlled, therefore the quality and recognition of their graduates are equal from wherever university you are studying from. The most important thing is you have to READ the course information carefully, since some courses may have the same name but different content. To find out the latest info abt course that you are taking and where it is offered, I suggest you to go to the Dept. of Education, Science and Training website (http://cricos.dest.gov.au) and IDP Education Australia (www.idp.edu.au). It will give the list of institutions that are able to offer courses to international students who wants to continue their study in Australia. The info abt fees and requirements are available from the universities' websites. Please make sure that the information you are accessing are the one for International Students. Once decided on the institution, fill in the application form for the international students and send it together with certified copy of your academic qualification (in English and original language).
