It depends. Their school system is different than the States.... For those in K-12 grade, their year is broken up into 4 'terms', ten-week stretches that go throughout the year with about two weeks off in-between. These weeks can be broken as our school year is for holidays. To quote from KaBooBie: "Our school year starts with first term in January and goes until about April, then we have 2 weeks off before going back for another 10 week term between April - July, 2 weeks off, another 10 week term between July - Sep/Oct, 2 weeks off and then our last term runs from October until December. School finishes up just a few days before Christmas, and this break lasts for 6 weeks, this is our summer break."

School holiday dates vary a little from state to state, but roughly: Summer holidays from Mid December until late January First mid-semester break of 1 or 2 weeks towards the end of April Mid-year break of 2 weeks late June/early July Second mid-semester break 2 weeks in late September. Private schools usually have longer breaks. All public schooling is free for citizens and PRs. The government contributes a significant amount per student to all private schools which has the effect of lowering school fees below what would otherwise be charged.

1 School year Starts in late January (usually after Australia Day on 26th January) First lot of holidays is around Easter. Then June / July. Then September. The school year finishes about 2 weeks prior ro Christmas although some years finish late November 2) Public schools are government funded However there are some fees for books and excursions and such. I don't know if this is only for Australian taxpayers.

The beginning of the first term of the year starts usually right at the end of January. Primary school starting age is usually 5 years of age but no later than 7 years of age. Every January we receive $50.00 per child from our state governments. That usually covers all the stationary for most of the year. Although we are billed for school fees/contributions, it's not compulsary to pay them but if all parents paid these contributions then our schools will only benefit with better technology, sporting equipment etc etc. State Primary school fees/contributions are usually in the vacinity of $300.00 pa while high schools could demand between $500.00 to $750.00 pa. There are 4 terms per year with 2 week holidays per quarter except end of the year they receive 5-6 weeks off.

Not being familiar with ANY schools in Australia, I had to look this one up. Here is the web site for the Montessori Australia web site: http://aaaa.net.au/ I would recommend looking at schools in your area and seeing if they are a good match. Many schools do not even follow Montessori ideas, even though they say they are Montessori. Matt

High school student, summer abroad (2009) to maybe England or Australia

High school student, summer abroad (2009) to maybe England or Australia?
I am looking to spend next summer abroad for fun, not for school... (hopefully in Australia or England) I can't seem to find a program that allows me to spend 2-3 months, has good rates, and is for high school students. Anyone know any good programs like this? Personal stories of traveling abroad to these countries would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
