How long is an elementary school day in Melbourne, Australia

How long is an elementary school day in Melbourne, Australia?
I'm just curious, how long is an elementary school day in Melbourne, Australia? Like, what time do the students arrive and when do classes get out? Also, is it true that schools run year-long over there? I've heard that classes go year round with breaks between terms.

We call it primary school here. The day in most schools runs from about 9:00am until 3:00pm. Schools have 4 terms that begin in late January/early February. There is a break of a week or two around April; additional breaks of 2 weeks or so in June/July and September/October with a long summer holiday for about 6 weeks from about mid-December until school starts again around late January. The above dates are approximate as each state is a little different and private schools usually have slightly longer breaks than government schools.

Well at my school (I'm in yr 7) We start at 8:45 and end at 3:25 . It always been like this at my school whether it was primary o high school. We start around late january for about 8 weeks then get a 2 week holiday. term 2 is another 8-10 weeks then another 2 weeks holiday, then term 3 for 9 weeks then a 3 week holiday, and then the final term is 8-10 weeks then we get a 8 week summer holiday that goes through christmas and the new year.

How competitive are medical schools in Australia compared to the US

How competitive are medical schools in Australia compared to the US?
I'm an undergraduate student in the US planning on attending a medical school here or possibly in Australia.. does anyone know how the two compare? I will have a degree by the time I am ready to apply to med school so I am interested in the graduate programs there.. does anyone know if med schools in Australia require pre-med courses like the US and if so what are they? Any info you can give me will help, thanks!

It depends. I know for Australia schools for example Melbourne or Monash university, it needs a good undergraduate degree of at least 2nd upper class honours for graduate entry into medical school. US depends on whether is higher tier or middle tier medical school, for best medical school like Queen Mary Medical school in London, you will need a first class honours degree in any subject as they encourage diversity. But it is extremely competitive. If not, at least 2nd upper class honours. Next thing, take the MCAT or GMAT. Get a good grade. Then perform well in your interview, at your local representative. Good luck for your undergraduate degree and score well. Hope you will make it to medical school. See yar, hope it helps.

Hi there, The GAMSAT is a test for graduates to be admitted into Australian medical schools (Universities). A link is attached below with info. It is very competitive. We have a Doctor shortage in this country and an even greater shortage of medical places, due to the Govt's lack of investment in Universities. So, I encourage you to work hard at it, whereever you chose to study. We'd welcome you to Australia, that's for sure. It is certainly worthwhile to give this a go if you're planning on living and working in Australia. As I said, we have a Doctor shortage here and we could do with as many Doctors as we can get. Obviously if you're studying here we'd want you to be working here also... Even a full-fee paying student in Medical school isn't really any good to us if they don't practice medicine here. That's my view anyway. All the best with your studies.

G'day, Unfortunately you did not mention the area of study that you intend to do for your graduate course. To find out the course that you are taking and where it is offered, I suggest you to go to IDP Education Australia website (www.idp.edu.au). IDP is an organisation that gives information to international students who wants to continue their study in Australia. The information abt tuition fee and requirement will be available from the universities' website. Once decided on the uni, fill in the application form and send it together with certified copy of your academic qualification. The process will take abt 2-3weeks, depending on the time of the year. Hope this helps. Good luck for your study and welcome to Australia :)

Australian universities are currently on their mid-year break. Our university year begins late Feb./early March and ends in November. I think sophomore equates to what we call Second Year. I'm not sure though what class 2011 means exactly. Is that the year you will graduate? Or does it mean something else? In my state (Queensland), most 2nd year uni students would turn 19 some time during the year (keeping in mind that our uni year coincides with the calendar year). EDIT: I'm in Brisbane and the dates I have given are for Queensland. In Queensland, we have 2 university semesters per year. Semester 1 finished a couple of weeks ago. PS: Iv'e looked into the date question and universities throughout Australia are much the same as Queensland Unis. Other answerers are evidently confusing uni semester dates with K-12 dates which are very different and not relevant to university.

i am in perth and the start of the year is in february ..it's very different here. I am use to the Canadian school system which is a lot like the USA so it makes it easier but here it's so different but you will love it here!!

Hee hee, the old language problem. School (US) = university in Aus College (US) = school here Semester = term (we have four) Freshman, sophomore (I believe you spelt it wrong) = first, second year Different than = different from Where are you at? = Where are you/what stage are you up to? (depending on context) Class 2011 = ??? Our academic year starts in January or February.

ok a few things all australian educational institutions follow the calendar year. so universities start the year in early march, and finish in november. we dont have freshmen and sophomores, its just first, second, third year students etc. the uni year is split into 2 semesters (its now currently the semester break. second semester starts in a few weeks). im also the class of 2011. so my degree will be handed to me in november 2011 the person above me got a few things mixed up. college in the US is called university here. the 4 terms she was talking about refers to primary (years K-6) and high school (7-12). uni's follow the 2 semesters. Primary and high school start in early Feb, and uni's in early march because placements are still being organised until the end of Feb.

School starts in August and in college classes start in August too.
